Effective Treatment Modalities for Behavioral Health, Substance Use and Co-Occurring Disorders

CBT

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is an effective form of treatment for addiction, backed by scientific studies. It has been used successfully to treat mental health conditions and other disorders.

Those who suffer from behavioral issues such as depression, anxiety, coupled with addiction, are often driven by destructive thought patterns. CBT is an evidence-based modality which encourages clients to question and examine their recurring thoughts.

Through structured interventions with our Master’s level clinicians, clients learn to respond to challenging situations with new, more effective coping skills. This enables you to phase out those destructive thought patterns that are recognized as negative and unhealthy. These new skills are learned and practiced throughout the recovery process.

DBT

Dialectical Behavioral Therapy, DBT is a proven intervention for treating co-occurring disorders. DBT draws on elements of Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy and mindfulness meditation. Using DBT, clients learn how to regulate their emotions to reduce self-destructive behaviors that derive from intense or extreme emotions. A proven and effective treatment for both substance abuse and mental health issues, DBT can be easily customized to an individual treatment plan.

DBT focuses on the development of four key skills:

  • Distress tolerance
  • Emotion regulation
  • Mindfulness (living in the moment and fully experiencing emotions)
  • Interpersonal effectiveness

Yoga

Yoga teaches individuals to attend to direct experiences thereby reducing the frequency of intrusive thoughts.  Individuals with co-occurring disorders often experience feelings of being “out of control”, resulting in heightened anxiety as well as increased emotional outbursts. Practicing Yoga can be an effective way to regain control.

Yoga is used as an adjunct treatment for depression, anxiety, and addiction.  Clinical studies show that Yoga increases levels of the neurotransmitter GABA (gamma-aminobutyric acid) in the brain, which is typically deficient in individuals suffering from high levels of stress, anxiety, depression, and substance abuse.  The focus and determination Yoga requires allows individuals afflicted with co-occurring disorders to regaining control over their body and mind.  In addition, the combination of deep breathing and mindfulness exercises are effective in improving impulse control.

Because the practice of Yoga is readily available outside of treatment, clients are able to incorporate it into their daily lives.

Nutritional Guidance

Our clients receive nutritional guidance and education as part of their treatment program. Nutritional education is a vital component of the recovery process.  We help our clients heal and nourish their bodies which have often been damaged by substance abuse.  The foods we ingest have a direct impact on the way our brains function, affecting several neurotransmitters including acetylcholine, serotonin, dopamine, and GABA. Our Chef incorporates foods that have been shown to aid in restoring the balance and function of these neurotransmitters.

Physical Activity

Physical exercise is an important component in the recovery process. Clients have daily access to our on-site exercise facility to help them restore physical strength, develop healthy routines, and build confidence.
